Brief summary of the department and its capabilities:

Founded in 1592, Trinity College is the oldest university in Ireland. Today, Trinity College employs some 500 academic staff and has 12,800 students, a quarter of which are postgraduates. The College has 66 departments across 6 faculties and actively covers all the major scientific disciplines. Trinity participates in all the major EU research and development programmes and has currently over 1000 active research accounts and 800 self-financing activities. Trinity College produces over 2000 publications annually, and was rated by the EU as the number one research institute in Ireland in terms of citations. The value of new research accounts in the year to end-September 2000 was over 25M euro, the major providers being the European Union (about 30%), Irish Government (30%), industry (15-20%), and foundations and charities (10-15%).

The Botany Department has been co-ordinator and partner in several EU-funded projects over the last sixteen years; these include the Environment and Climate programme, EPOCH, INCO-DC, AIR, FAIR and various Fifth Framework programmes.The Botany Department also has long and extensive experience in palaeoecological research in peatland ecosystems. This includes a long-standing research activity in Spain where one of the ACCROTELM sites will be located. In addition to extensive fieldwork in Spain we have been host to three palaeoecological postdoctoral fellows from Spain in recent years.
