One of the advantages of working as a member of a team is that you can all benefit from each other's strengths. The purpose of this exercise is to give recognition to the varied contributions that individuals make to the working of a group. Below is a list of some of the processes which you will be involved in completing a group project. You may modify this list and weightings if everyone in the group is agreed. This is best done near the beginning when you have devised a work plan. You may wish to revise the scheme at the end, but this may result in conflict. If you do make any changes it is essential that all members use an agreed list of project process criteria and weightings which total to 20 points.
| Project processes | Weightings of points |
| 1. Ideas and suggestions | 4 |
| 2. Leadership and group organisation | 4 |
| 3. Data collection/collation/analysis | 4 |
| 4. Report writing | 4 |
| 5. Preparing/giving verbal presentation | 4 |
| Total | 20 |
In assessing the relative contributions of team members account should be taken of the quality and effectiveness of the contribution as well as the amount of effort expended. Using the attached form independently assess the relative contribution of each team member, including yourself, by:
a) Multiplying the number of members of your group by 20. The result is the total number of points you have to allocate. The sum of all the marks allocated between the members of your group must equal this number. The only constraint is that no one should be given more than 40 points.
b) The number of points you have to allocate between the members of your group for each project process criteria may be calculated by multiplying the number of members in your group by the weighting factor (4). The sum of the marks allocated for each project process criteria must equal this number with the constraint that no one should be given more than double the number of points in the weighting (8).
For example, if there are 4 members in your group you will have a total of 80 points to allocate (16 points for each of the 5 project processes). No member of the group can be given more than 8 points for each process. Only whole number of points should be allocated. You are encouraged to use the range of points at your disposal and avoid the tendency to give everyone a similar number of points. It is unrealistic that all members of a group will have made an equal contribution for each of the project process criteria. Thus to ensure that the exercise is taken seriously forms which show that all members have been given identical points for all project processes will be returned.
(NOTE TO STAFF: The 'average' student will obtain 20 points. Average the points given to each individual in the group and deduct 20 points from this figure. This will give a +ve or -ve reallocation 'mark'.)
