Disappointed by the difficulty of getting students to contribute in lectures, I have set aside 5 minutes in each lecture for students to present a summary (using one overhead) of a paper related to that lecture. During the previous week's lecture, students are picked at random and given a single paper from the reference list to read for the next week. At the end of the next week's lecture the students are given five minutes to present the paper. Their overhead is copied to the students or placed on a local newsgroup for their access and the audience encouraged to ask questions about the paper. In this way the lectures are made more varied, the student skills of acquiring condensing and understanding papers are enhanced and the students are encouraged to further dip into the reference list.
