The paper describes the role taken by a subject association in defending the position and status of geography in schools in England and Wales. This has involved a risky, but eventually successful, pro-active approach, and has implications for higher education.

National Geography Awareness Week 1987: an assessment

ABSTRACT
National Geography Awareness Week, initiated by the National Geographic Society and supported by other geographic organisations, seeks to improve the state of geographic knowledge both in schools and among the public. The achievements and limitations of this public relations strategy are assessed. While the commemorative week generated much media attention and stimulated many celebratory activities, the image of geography as a serious academic discipline in higher education may not have been helped.

Fieldwork as Theatre. a week's performance in Venice and its region

ABSTRACT
The conventions of fieldwork are reassessed in the light of teaching a week's field course on the landscape and culture of Venice and its region. The metaphor of 'theatre' helps conceptualise the present post-structuralist insistence on representation in relations between land and life, as well as the more traditional geographic emphasis on observation. The metaphor of theatre is articulated through the exercises of the fieldwork, including urban trails, coach trips, discussion sessions, group projects and, not least, the experience of living for a week in an Italian city.
