| Alexandra Digital Library | Sponsored by the National Science
Foundation, the US Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency,
and NASA, Alexandria focuses on defining cataloguing rules and an interface
that can be used eventually to access geospatially referenced materials
of all types. Digital library projects like Alexandria promise to make such
materials far more easily accessible for teaching and learning.

| ARGUS Project | Funded by the National Science
Foundation and developed at the University of Minnesota under the leadership
of Dr. Philip Gersmehl. The aim of the project is to have students learn
to use the concepts and skills of geography by analyzing real-world issues
in both historical and contemporary contexts. The ARGUS materials are designed
to be used in secondary school social studies classes, teacher training
courses in geography, and introductory college courses. The project is now
being expanded to developing activities and readings for the entire world.
The material is used in some introductory higher education courses.

| CTI - Centre for Geography, Geology and Meteorology | The aim of the CTI Centre is to
enhance the quality and effectiveness of teaching and learning of geography

with the study of the spacial nature of computer communications networks,

journal on both generic and discipline-based concerns regarding teaching
and learning. There is a section concerned with geography
in higher education that contains a developing list of key sources (including
books and articles) on teaching geography.

| DfES Geography Teaching Resource | The Department for Education &
Skills (DfES) has prepared a set of tables for use as a learning resource
for students of geography. The data are drawn from the Employers Skill Survey
of establishments in England, a large scale survey of over 27,000 establishments.

of career opportunities for geographers, remote sensing/GIS staff, environmental
scientists, climate/atmospheric scientists, oceanographers, geoscientists,

| GeogNet | GeogNet is a moderated email discussion
list, primarily for the discussion of issues associated with teaching and
learning in UK higher education. The list is moderated by Ian Livingstone
(University College Northampton).

| Geography Alliances of the National Geographical Society | Fifty-four Alliances, with a total
membership in excess of 150,000 teachers and academics, exist in all States
and Territories of the US. Each Alliance is the energy center for local
and statewide efforts to improve geography education. They achieve this
by giving teachers the knowledge, skills and materials they need to make
geography an exciting subject. Whilst the Geography Alliances have a secondary
education focus, they provide a useful point of connection between that
sector and university-based educators.

the CTI - Centre for Geography,
Geology and Meteorology. The GeographyCal Club aims to develop
saleable Computer Assisted Learning packages for undergraduate courses in

| Hands On! Project | This US national project developed
active learning modules on the human dimensions of global change'. The project
focuses on the tertiary-level and modules were produced through a collaborative
process that involved module authors, participants in summer workshops,
and project staff at Clark University.

| Information System for Los Angeles | The Information System for Los
Angeles (ISLA) is sponsored by University of Southern California. ISLA is
being planned as an integrated digital archival collection for Los Angeles
and its region. Like other collections, ISLA will contain textual sources
(books, newspapers, theses, dissertations, and manuscripts), photographs,
video, scanned maps, and demographic data. It will serve as a prototype
of the types of digital collections that might soon be available for geography
education.

| Physical Geography Glossary of Terms | A free ebook (pdf file) which
can be viewed on Windows or Macintosh computers using Adobe Acrobat Reader.

| Practical Skills in Environmental Science | Practical Skills in Environmental
Science (Jones, Duck, Reed and Weyers, 1999) provides a generic approach
to skills drawing on the authors' teaching experiences in the University
of Dundee. The book's main emphasis is on fieldwork and taking measurements
and samples, but it also includes sections relating to basic laboratory
procedures and to transferable skills, e.g. computing and study skills.
Fifty-two chapters are grouped under eight headings: Fundamental Principles,
The Investigative Approach, Obtaining Samples, Manipulating and Identifying
Sampled Materials, Environmental Analysis, Analysis and Presentation of
Data, IT and Library Resources, and Communicating Information. The authors
believe that learning general strategies and skills can result in a deeper
understanding of the underlying rational of methods, an approach which recognises
the complex and integrated nature of environmental systems. The text was
written before, but in anticipation of, the 'QAA Subject Benchmark Statement
for Earth Science, Environmental Sciences and Environmental Studies', onto
which the topics covered are closely mapped. |
